Pediatric Airway Emergencies and Common Respiratory Disorders (1 credit hours)
This module introduces the need to be effective and efficient in responding to pediatric patients with compromised respiratory function due to airway obstruction and common respiratory disorders. Signs and symptoms and basic assessment tips are provided as well an identification of assessment obstacles. Airway and common respiratory disorders are covered including croup, epiglottitis, foreign body aspiration, pneumonia, bronchiolitis, and cystic fibrosis.

Course Approval Expiration/End Date: July 1, 2011, Category A Credit

This new course replaces an old course, "Pediatric Airway Emergencies: Perspectives for Radiologic Technologists" and has been assigned a new course approval number. You are eligible to enroll in this new course for CE credit.

This activity may be available in multiple formats or from different sponsors. The ARRT does not allow CE activities such as internet courses, home study programs or directed readings to be repeated for CE credit in the same or any subsequent biennium.


Idamae Ho, BS, RT(R)

Idamae Ho graduated from the Kettering College of Medical Arts Radiologic Technology program and has been a licensed Technologist since 2002. She has worked in a variety of settings such as hospitals, orthopedic clinics, and family practice offices. Currently, Idamae is the Informatics Manager at Dayton Children’s Medical Center.

Darrall Hughes, BS, RT(R)

Darrall Hughes is a graduate of the Sinclair Community College Radiology program and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management from Park University. Darrall has worked in a Level-One trauma hospital and as a Human Resources Manager for a national nursing home corporation, and currently resides as the Radiology Manager at Dayton Children’s Medical Center, overseeing General Radiology, Ultrasound, and Nuclear Medicine.

After studying the module, learners should be able to:

  • Identify etiologies associated with airway distress and common respiratory disoders.
  • Recognize signs and symptoms of respiratory disorders attributed to croup, epiglottitis, foreign body aspiration, pneumonia, bronchiolitis, and cystic fibrosis.
  • Identify diagnostic tests to confirm the diagnosis of airway distress and common respiratory disorders.
  • Describe treatment modalities for airway distress and common respiratory disorders.
