Abstract

This module describes the role of High Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy treatment for prostate cancer patients. The module will compare HDR and LDR prostate treatments and provide you with results from each treatment modality. The module will also present a historical perspective on radiation treatments for patients with prostate cancer.

Upon completion of the module the learner will be able to:

Define Brachytherapy and HDR Brachytherapy.
Explain the process of HDR Prostate Brachytherapy.
List differences and advantages in HDR Brachytherapy as opposed to LDR Brachytherapy.
List other techniques for Prostate Cancer treatment.
Understand the flow of treatment from beginning to end.
List the team members involved in a High Dose Rate Prostate Bracytherapy case.
Know what medications are used for moderate sedation during the HDR procedure.
Know the doses delivered during HDR Prostate Brachytherapy.
Know the source most commonly used in HDR Brachytherapy.
Understand D90, V100 and COIN (conformality index).
