Diabetes Mellitus: An Overview (1 credit hours)
The author provides a brief overview of important statistics on the incidence and economic impact of diabetes mellitus. Also included is a description of the general features of glucose metabolism as well as the pathogenesis and manifestations of the disease. Three disease categories are distinguished: Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational Diabetes. Disease complications and diagnostic methodologies are also addressed. Cheryl Jefferies, RN, MSN

Cheryl Jefferies is an assistant professor at Sinclair Community College and teaches medical-surgical nursing. Mrs. Jefferies has been in nursing for thirty-one years and has previously taught in associate degree nursing programs in South Carolina and Tennessee. She is a former nationally certified diabetes educator and has significant experience working with patients with diabetes. Mrs. Jefferies has worked in acute care hospitals in medical-surgical care, surgery and in surgery and PACU. In addition, she has worked in home health care and has delivered public service education about diabetes through TV, radio, public speaking and health screening venues.

Upon completion of the module the learner should be able to:
  • Describe general features of glucose metabolism and diabetes mellitus.
  • Distinguish the pathogenesis and manifestations of Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes mellitus.
  • Describe the diagnostic test for diabetes mellitus.
  • Distinguish acute and chronic complications of diabetes mellitus.
