Ergonomics for Radiologic Technologists, Part 2: Moving and Lifting (0.5 credit hours)

This module describes and illustrates muscles that should be used to move and lift heavy objects, details the basic mechanics of moving an object, and describes the proper way to move or lift heavy objects to help avoid injury and to maintain flexibility of joints and muscles. Course Approval Expiration/End Date: July 1, 2011 Category A Credit

This activity may be available in multiple formats or from different sponsors. The ARRT does not allow CE activities such as internet courses, home study programs or directed readings to be repeated for CE credit in the same or any subsequent biennium.

Colleen Whittington, MS, PT
Colleen Whittington is associate professor and chairperson of the Physical Therapist Assistant program at Sinclair Community College (Dayton, OH). She is also a part-time adjunct professor in the MPT program at the Dayton-area branch of Andrews University and she holds a Master of Health Science degree from the University of Indianapolis. Colleen's clinical experience includes acute care, rehabilitation, home health and extended care, outpatient orthopedic, industrial medicine, and chronic pain care. She has over 30 years management experience in physical therapy departments.
After completion of the module, the learner should be able to:
  • Identify important muscles used in lifting and moving.
  • Recognize the importance of maintaining joint and muscle flexibility.
  • Determine how to effectively use BOS and weight shift when COG changes during lifting and moving.
  • Recognize the importance of planning for routine moving and lifting postures.
  • Recognize challenges to good body mechanics’ encountered by health care practitioners in their daily work and determine appropriate protective responses.
