Bariatric Surgery: Treatments for Obesity (1 credit hours)
This module discusses the surgical treatment for morbid obesity. Attention is given to the anatomy of the gastrointestinal tract; the risks of morbid obesity; the criteria that the patient must meet to be a candidate for the surgery; and the early and late complications of the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass surgery. Radiographic appearance of bariatric surgeries and their complications are also considered.

Alison A. Clarey, DO
Alison A. Clarey, D.O. has practiced General Surgery in Dayton, Ohio since 1978. After receiving her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan, she attended the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines (IA) and graduated in 1972. Dr. Clarey completed her internship and surgical residency at Grandview Hospital, finishing in 1977. Since 1985, Dr. Clarey has been performing Bariatric surgery, specifically the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass. She has medical staff privileges at Grandview and Southview Hospitals and Kettering Medical Center. A Fellow in the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Clarey is board-certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery. In addition to serving as Chief of Staff at Grandview and Southview Hospitals in 1991 and 1992, she has served as President of the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery. She is past President of the Ohio Osteopathic Association (June 1999 - June 2000) and of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (Sept 2006 - Oct 2007).
Upon completion of this module, the learner should be able to:
  • Identify the anatomy of the upper gastrointestinal tract.
  • Know the basic principals of surgical treatment for morbid obesity.
  • Know the criteria for surgical treatment of morbid obesity.
  • Know the complications of the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery.
  • Recognize the limits of radiologic evaluation of complications.
  • Recognize radiologic films of several bariatric surgeries.
