Osteoporosis: An Overview of the Disease, Diagnosis, and Treatment (1 credit hours)

This module describes osteoporosis, its influencing factors, diagnosis and treatment. The first lesson examines the prevalence of osteoporosis and its costs to healthcare. The second lesson reviews the structure and function of bones and how osteoporosis occurs. Lesson Three details the etiology, symptoms, risk factors and preventive methods associated with osteoporosis. The fourth lesson contains a brief view of the methods of diagnosing osteoporosis through bone densitometry and treatment. Course Approval Expiration/End Date: October 1, 2010 Category A Credit

This activity may be available in multiple formats or from different sponsors. The ARRT does not allow CE activities such as internet courses, home study programs or directed readings to be repeated for CE credit in the same or any subsequent biennium.

Jan Gibson, M.Ed, RT(R)

Jan Gibson graduated in 1974 from the School of Radiologic Technology at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren, Ohio where she later was employed as a staff radiologic technologist. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Technical Education from the University of Akron in 1981 and a Master of Education Degree in Health Education and Promotion from Kent State University in 2001. She has been a program director of Radiologic Technology since 1977, first at Trumbull Memorial Hospital and currently at Kent State University Salem Campus. She is now the senior program director for the Associate of Applied Science degree in Radiologic Technology and for the Bachelor in Radiologic and Imaging Sciences degree, offering sub majors in CT, MRI, Diagnostic Medical Sonography and Nuclear Medicine. Mrs. Gibson has been a frequent speaker at local and state Radiologic Technology society meetings.


Margie Iagulli, M.Ed, RT(R)

Margie Iagulli graduated in 1984 from the School of Radiologic Technology at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, Ohio where she later was employed as a staff radiologic technologist and clinical instructor. She was also employed as a radiologic technologist at several healthcare facilities in the area. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Kent State University in 1989 and a Master of Education Degree in Health Education and Promotion from Kent State University in 2002. She has been employed since 1997 as a full time instructor for the associate degree program in Radiologic Technology at Kent State University. Ms. Iagulli has been a frequent speaker at local radiologic technology society meetings.

After completion of the module, the student should be able to:

  • Define osteoporosis.
  • Describe the structure and function of bones, differentiating between cortical and trabecular bone.
  • Identify the risk factors associated with osteoporosis.
  • Describe methods of preventing osteoporosis.
  • Differentiate between methods of measuring and diagnosing bone mineral density.
  • Identify methods of treating osteoporosis.
